Next Generation of Project Management – Inaugural Event

The launch of the Sunshine Coast’s homegrown Project Management Community of Practice proved to be a smashing success at their recent inaugural breakfast event.

Attendees from across the coast were treated to a warm welcome from committee founding member, Core Project Advisory Director, Dave Mason, who shared how the committee’s name ‘Next Generation’ came about. Next Generation is focused on looking forward and challenging the norms regarding many of the traditional views and understanding of project management and embracing the many changes that are taking place. This is reflected in their vision “To showcase the Sunshine Coast Project Management community, to share experiences and knowledge, and to influence and drive the delivery of sustainable projects”.

Andrew Wallace, Federal Member for Fischer, opened the event providing an insight into his background and strong commitment to major project development on the Sunshine Coast.

The inaugural event heard from guest speakers, Ian Biggs, Senior Manager for the Unitywater Enterprise Portfolio Management Office, and Ben McGovern, Coordinator of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Civil Projects Team.

Ian took attendees on a journey from where project management started to the modern digital age as we now know it. He spoke about the mindset required and the array of tools that we now draw on to navigate the current context of project management.

Ben presented great insight into the growth the Sunshine Coast is currently experiencing as well as the projected growth over the next 20 years. To facilitate this growth, several major projects need to be undertaken and Ben spoke about the complexities that come with these large projects, particularly from his perspective in infrastructure delivery.

The event wrapped up with a lively question and answer session and an opportunity for attendees to network with project managers from a vast array of industries.

The Next Generation Committee plans to host 3 to 4 Project Management events each year, if you’re interested in attending these events, or would like to be a guest speaker or event sponsor, click on the Contact above button to get in touch with Dave.
